In many ways the most spectacular sight in Concan is the evening departure of millions of Free-tailed Bats from a local cave….
…but there are plenty of birds to look at; the celebrated Black-capped Vireo and Golden-cheeked warbler, of course, but also…
…incandescent Vermilion Flycatchers.
Moving west the land turns arid and wind-sculpted…
…and in Big Bend we’ll walk up dry washed is search of…
…Lucifer Hummingbird, here a belligerent male on a display perch.
The desert has other attractions too, seasonal flowers will be at their peak and many cacti will be blooming.
The Chisos Mountains are impressive…
…and we’ll walk up into them in search of…
…Colima Warbler, a mouse on the wintering ground but in spring often singing from an exposed perch.
The Davis Mountain are cool and lovely too and are a great place to see the bizarre Montezuma Quail.
Water is a magnet and at places like Lake Balmorea, one can see almost anything; here a group of Franklin’s Gulls.
