WINGS Birding Tours – Photo Gallery

Colombia: The Santa Marta Mountains

The isolated mountains of Santa Marta, Colombia and the Guajira Peninsula are just a few hours direct flight from Miami. The region is well known in bird circle for its endemism… …and overall biodiversity… …but it’s also beautiful and varied with… …notably friendly people. We’ll explore diverse habitats, from Caribbean coastal wetlands… …arid scrublands of the Guajira Peninsula… …the magical and relaxing beaches of the Tayrona National Park… …to the cloud forests of the Santa Marta mountains. We’ll use a comfortable bus most places… …but to reach the highest part of the Sierra Nevada, we’ll need 4x4 vehicles. Our accommodations will include comfortable lodges… …most with hummingbirds feeders in the garden… …and birding possibilities from your room. We expect to see a number of species with a very restricted ranges; for example White-whiskered Spinetail… …and the splendid Vermilion Cardinal… ….and in the mountains, many endemics with names that begin with ‘Santa Marta’, like the S.M. Antpitta… …the common and confident S.M. Brush-finch… …and the still formally undescribed S.M. Screech-owl… In addition to the endemics, there will be stunningly beautiful birds like Blue-naped Chlorophonia… …superb mammals such as the fancy Cotton-top Tamarin… …and equally fancy insects, some sublime… …and others simply formidable. All in all this tour may be the perfect antidote to the late-winter blues.
