During the flight to Bahia Solano on the Pacific coast, we will have an overview of the amazing pristine humid forests of the Choco ecoregion.
The Choco Ecoregion being one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the World.
The bird diversity is impressive and 60+ species are endemic to the Choco ecoregion like this Toucan Barbet…
… this Velvet-purple Coronet (left) and Empress Brilliant…
… or this elegant Tanager Finch!
To explore this fantastic area, we will use a small plane to fly to the coast…
… for sure we would love to travel onboard one of the colorful ‘chiva’ public buses, but they are too slow for us…
… so we will use a comfortable minibus for most of the trip…
… and several kinds of 4x4 jeeps to reach the most remote areas!
We will bird from the wild coastline at Utria NP…
… where mangroves border pristine humid forest…
… to the highest part of the Las Tangaras reserve, to enjoy a view of the surrounding peaks.
We will enjoy the atmosphere and high diversity of some cloud forest…
… but also visit the beautiful Pacific coast …
… and dry forest and agricultural fields in the Cauca valley.
The number of fantastic birds is endless on this tour, like the Crested Ant-Tanager often seen near Jardin…
… the Spot-crowned Antvireo quite common at lower elevation…
… the fancy Purplish-mantled Tanager, found in most of the flocks at Las Tangaras …
… or the rare Sapayoa, the only species in its family, at Bahia Solano.
We will visit several feeding stations attracting plenty of colorful hummingbirds, here a Purple-throated Woodstar (left) and Violet-tailed Sylph (right)…
… as well as an antpitta feeding station attracting Chestnut-naped Antpitta…
… and an Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek offering stunning photographic opportunities!
Obviously the amazing Choco diversity is not restricted to birds. The region is home to amazing reptiles, plants and insects like this glass-winged butterfly…
… the stunning grasshopper Opaon varicolor …
… or this Condoto Stubfoot Toad, all inviting you to visit the Colombian Choco!
On this tour, accommodations are mostly countryside hotels…
…where you can relax in a beautiful landscape…
… we also use a lodge run by the Pro Aves NGO…
… where we enjoy excellent food and juice in front of the birdy feeders!
