Paul Tamwenya

Paul Tamwenya was born in Eastern Uganda near the foothills of Mount Elgon National Park and grew up accompanying his grandfather, who was a great hunter of birds, small mammals and big rodents, on forays into the natural world near his home. These experiences introduced Paul to the habits and behaviors of wildlife communication and prepared him for the lifetime job he nurtures and does with passion. Paul leads both cultural and wildlife tours around Uganda, Rwanda, Northern Tanzania and Southern Kenya and has built effective and efficient leadership and teamwork skills. His keen field skills include an extensive knowledge of bird calls and songs.

Paul holds a bachelor’s degree in tourism management from Makerere University, Kampala Uganda. Additionally, Paul holds certificates in cultural tourism guiding, bird guiding and a Certificate in Advanced Motoring Techniques for Tourist Drivers. He is a founding member and chairman of the Uganda Cultural Guides Club, Uganda’s Tourism Sector Skills Council, and the former Editor for the Uganda Birding Association as well as the former Chairman and a founding member of the Uganda Cultural Guides Club (UCGC).

After being a general Secretary of the Uganda Safari Guides Association for 4 years and training guides in both Uganda and Rwanda from 2007 to 2015, Paul decided to concentrate his passion through his company Journeys Uganda where he is a director and lead guide for mainly birding and cultural tours in East Africa.

Paul was the winner of the 2017 Pearl of Africa Tourism Excellence Awards for best cultural guide, given to him in appreciation of the services offered to Uganda and the all the different visitors who have had a chance to interact with him during their time in East Africa and beyond.
