British Zoologist Paul Smith has been based in Paraguay since 2004. He has published over 100 scientific articles on the wildlife of the country and is co-author of both the forthcoming Field Guide to the Birds of Paraguay and the Annotated Checklist of the Reptiles of Paraguay. Paul is recognised as a national expert on Paraguayan fauna and has maintained the website www.faunaparaguay.com since 2006, developing it into a massive source of online of information about the country´s wildlife.
I had the pleasure of touring Paraguay with Paul Smith & Stuart Elsom ... Having birded Argentina, Brazil & Chile, I anticipated 20 lifers at most. I saw 112 new species. And Paul was a delightful co-leader, always able to make you laugh, never flustered visibly by road or viewing difficulties. Conditions on the trip were not always easy (slogging through mud daily at a national park, for example), but the daily rewards far exceeded such inconveniences. This is a gem of a tour, and participants will not only enrich their life lists but also their fondest memories.

I saw and photographed more new bird species on this tour than any other WINGS tour I have been on. I estimate that I photographed about 175 new species. This was entirely due to the skill of Paul as a guide and his diligence in assuring that as many as possible see each bird.
