Our Peninsular Malaysia tour delivered an excellent mix of lowland, coastal, montane, and rainforest birding. We began around Kuala Lumpur, where Ulu Langat produced a scarce Rufous-collared Kingfisher, followed by productive wetland birding at Paya Indah. Around Kuala Selangor, a superbly confiding Mangrove Pitta was a major highlight, while the coastal mudflats and Tanjung Karang paddyfields added storks, rails, raptors, and the memorable pair of Dusky Eagle-Owls.
Fraser’s Hill lived up to its reputation, with Fire-tufted Barbets, Long-tailed Broadbills, Streaked Spiderhunters, Lesser Shortwings, Red-bearded Bee-eaters, Sultan Tits, and excellent views of Malayan Partridge.
In Taman Negara, ancient rainforest provided some of the tour’s most memorable encounters, including a stunning Green Broadbill, the monotypic Crested Jayshrike, and an impressive range of malkohas, hornbills, broadbills, babblers, and trogons.
We finished at Bukit Tinggi, where the hill forest produced another fine selection of birds and, most importantly, excellent views of the elusive Mountain Peacock-Pheasant.
Overall, the tour offered a rewarding variety of habitats and an impressive selection of Malaysia’s birds.
