News from Northern India

Our nearly three-week journey through northern India was a brilliant mix of birding, wildlife, culture, and adventure from start to finish.

We kicked things off in wonderfully chaotic Delhi before heading to the Chambal River, where the trip really came alive. Indian Skimmers skimmed the water’s surface, River Terns hovered overhead, and Mugger Crocodiles basked on the banks—an exciting way to begin. From there we travelled on to Agra, where the Taj Mahal absolutely lived up to the hype, even with the crowds.

Next up were two fantastic days at Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur. Sarus Cranes strode through the wetlands, Greater Spotted Eagles kept us scanning the skies, and Painted Storks added plenty of colour, while Indian Thick-knees cryptically lurked in the shade. A bonus afternoon outing delivered Bluethroats and Spotted Crakes, which was a real treat.

Ranthambore gave us memorable safaris, with multiple sightings of Bengal Tigers, Sloth Bears (including cubs), and Golden Jackals, plus a supporting cast of birds such as Painted Spurfowl and Red-headed Vulture. In Corbett, the scenery changed but the excitement didn’t, with Wallcreeper, Himalayan Griffons, Jungle Owlet, and the unforgettable Great Hornbill.

Higher up around Nainital and Pangot we found Himalayan specials like Cheer Pheasants, Upland Pipits, and flocks of Altai Accentors. Sattal added forest gems including Rufous-throated Partridge, Rufous-chinned Laughingthrush, and plenty of owls—Brown Wood-Owl along with Brown and Tawny Fish-Owls.

We finished the tour at Sultanpur, where a noticeable change in climate set the scene for some excellent final birding. Here we found Striated Babblers, Paddyfield Warblers, Crested Larks, and Sind Sparrows to round off the trip.
