As befits the Rainbow Nation, our tour to Western South Africa this year was full of colour. There was a lot of red to start with as we wandered through the red dunes of the Kalahari enjoying Namaqua and Burchell’s Sandgrouse coming to drink and stately Secretarybirds striding through the grassland. Then there was the amazing views we had of the Blood Moon in the dark skies of Bushmanland, and of course the wonderful Red Lark. There was the delicate hue of the aptly named Blue Cranes, and the kaleidoscope of colours from the drifts of wildflowers in the West Coast National Park and the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Striking yellow and black Yellow Bishops were hard to miss, as was the sparkling iridescence of Orange-breasted and Lesser Double-collared Sunbirds.
