Hugo Haroldo Enríquez Toledo is a 34-year-old resident of Guatemala City. His fascination with birds began in 1996, when he worked for Fundaeco investigating the birds of the Guatemala City area and the department of Izabal. Since then, he has studied birds in 16 of Guatemala’s 22 departments, including three years banding birds in Izabal.
Hugo spent four months in Pennsylvania studying techniques for monitoring migrant raptors at Hawk Mountain. From 1997 to 1999, he was part of the Guatemalan team that conducted the first hawk counts on both coasts of the country. In 2004 he served as an intern in California with the Institute for Bird Populations and Sequioa and Kings Canyon National Parks, where he conducted breeding bird surveys and banded birds. Hugo has also been a valuable participant and leader at the series of International Birdwatching Encounters in Guatemala.
Hugo is currently responsible for conducting censuses and bird studies at several areas on Guatemala, and leads birding groups to natural areas throughout the country.
