We’ll start at Costanera Sur on the edge of bustling Buenos Aires…
…where Whistling Herons lie in wait…
…waterfowl such as Ringed Teal preen each other….
and Plumbeous Rails are possible.
After our short flight to the northwest, a wonderful lodge awaits us.
Nearby we will be in quest of Cream-backed Woodpecker…
…Dot-fronted Woodpecker…
…and both Black-legged and Red-legged Seriemas.
Calilegua National Park lies amid the clouds…
…and its Yungas forest holds many Dusky-legged Guans…
… and the much rarer Red-faced Guan.
A night excursion could yield the phenomenal Lyre-tailed Nightjar.
We’ll continue north to drier habitats…
…seeking Buff-breasted Earthcreepers…
…Black-billed Shrike Tyrants…
…and be on the lookout for both Black-winged Ground Dove…
…and the stunning endemic Bare-eyed Ground Dove.
High into the Andes we’ll explore the altiplano…
…and visit Laguna Pozuelos…
…where 3 species of flamingo can be seen.
Along the roadsides we’ll likely find Variable Hawks perched on poles…
…Ornate Tinamous scratching through the grit…
…Mountain Parakeets seeking shelter from the wind…
…or perhaps a family of Lesser Rheas marching by.
Andean roads will be circuitous…
…and pass by high elevation wetlands that we’ll explore…
…searching for birds such as Giant Coot.
Views from our hotels will also be wonderful…
…as we travel south through more arid habitats…
…seeking such gems as Blue-crowned Parakeets…
…Elegant-crested Tinamous…
…Tawny-throated Dotterels…
…and more endemics such as White-throated Cachalote and Sandy Gallito.
We will end our trip at the world famous Iguazu Falls…
…behind which Great Dusky Swifts nest.
…while nearby Ringed Kingfishers hunt…
…the stunning Black-fronted Piping Guans look on…
…and Southern Antpipits sing from the undergrowth.
Our hotel grounds here has good habitat and even hold prizes like Toco Toucan.
Away from the busy main park we’ll travel back roads seeking Helmeted Woodpeckers…
…and try not to hit Slaty-breasted Wood-Rails as they dart in front of our bus.
…and maybe we’ll even find a Robust Woodpecker.
In town Versicolored Emeralds perch alongside Gilded Hummingbirds…
…and we’ll have a chance at the amazing Swallow-tailed Hummingbird…
…and the striking Violaceous Euphonias.
Beautiful weather allows for the occasional packed breakfast…
…and outdoor Argentinian parilla…
…with enough meat for any serious carnivore…
…some of which couldn’t wait for us to finish.
