WINGS Birding Tours – Photo Gallery

Mexico: San Blas - Mangroves and Forests

We might not come to San Blas were it not for our hotel; run by friends, comfortable and quiet with superb service and excellent food… …and they also provide us with a comfortable vehicle. But of course there’s excellent birding nearby, on quiet side roads and wide trails. (cw) Birds within walking distance of our hotel include Mexican (or Yelllow-winged) Cacique… …Russet-crowned Motmot… …fig-loving Mexican Parrotlets… …and the handsome Golden-cheeked Woodpecker. In the tropical forest of the nearby foothills we should find… …the stunning Black-throated Magpie-Jay… …Orange-fronted Parakeets… …and perhaps the elusive Red-breasted Chat… …or a Hook-billed Kite, one of the many raptors possible on this tour. The many wintering migrants around San Blas include Wilson’s Warbler… …and flocks of Wilson’s Plovers. We’ll cruise the mangroves looking for… (cw) …the elusive Rufous-necked Wood-Rail… …the striking Bare-throated Tiger-Heron… …and the bizarre Boat-bled Heron. After a morning in the field, lunch with refreshing limonades is a welcome break… (fr) …and the hotel pool may offer further refreshment during siesta time. The nearby mountains support a luxuriant pine-oak forest…
…home to a number of endemics and near endemics, including Red-headed Tanager…
…Spotted Wren… …Black-headed Siskin… …and perhaps the tiny Bumblebee Hummingbird. There’s more to San Blas than birds: here a Crimson-patch Longwing, one of many spectacular butterflies… (cw) …and here an American Crocodile. The area is also famous for spectacular sunsets and dawns, which will add to the plentiful memories from this wonderful region.
