Colombia: The Chocó

A remote biodiversity hotspot

During the flight to Bahia Solano on the Pacific coast, we’ll have an overview of the amazingly pristine humid forests of the Choco ecoregion… …one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the world. To explore this fantastic area, we’ll use a small plane to fly to the coast… … and we would love to travel onboard one of the colorful ‘chiva’ public buses, but they are too slow for us… … so we’ll use a comfortable minibus for most of the trip… …augmented by several kinds of 4x4s to reach the more remote locations. We’ll bird from the wild coastline at Utria NP… …where mangroves border pristine humid forest… …to the highest part of the Montezuma road close to the Tatama peaks. We’ll experience the atmosphere and high diversity of some cloud forest… …and also visit wetlands like the Sonso lagune near the city of Buga… …and dry forest and agricultural fields in the Cauca valley. The bird diversity is impressive and 60+ species are endemic to the Choco ecoregion lincluding Toucan Barbet… …the lovely Club-winged Manakin… …the unique Gray-and-gold Tanager… …the flashy Scarlet-and-white Tanager… …and the elegant Black Solitaire. The number of fantastic birds is endless, for example Crested Ant-Tanager is fairly common among the Anchicaya road,… …Spot-crowned Antvireo is quite common at lower elevation… …the fancy Purplish-mantled Tanager is found in most of the flocks at Las Tangaras or along the Montezuma road… …and the impressive Ornate Hawk-eagle, uncommon but regularly seen along the Anchicaya road. We’ll visit several feeding stations attracting plenty of colorful hummingbirds, here a Booted Racquet-tail… …as well as superb tanagers like Multicolored Tanager, another endemic to the Choco. The amazing Choco diversity is not restricted to birds. It’s also home to amazing reptiles, plants or insects like this glass-winged butterfly… …or the stunning grasshopper Opaon varicolor, here inviting you all to discover the fabulous Choco!
