There can be few better ways to start a tour than by looking for Wallcreeper…
..unless it’s starting a tour by seeing a Wallcreeper!
Our journey takes us to some great raptor habitat, with three species of vulture possible—here a Eurasian Griffon.
The number of raptor species is impressive, but the woodpecker list isn’t bad either, including Middle-spotted.
Bulgaria’s coastal wetlands are of global importance for Dalmatian Pelican…
…and Eurasian Spoonbills are possible on several days of the tour.
Our picnic lunches include fresh bread, local cheese, meat, and tomatoes…
…and maybe a flyover Eurasian Honey Buzzard for dessert!
Eastern Olivaceous Warblers sing from patches of scrub and overhead wires…
…and we’ll see European Bee-eaters on many days, maybe even visiting a roadside colony.
The coastal cliffs at Yailata are reminiscent of steppe, with singing Quails and purring European Turtle Doves…
…while Eurasian Golden Orioles (like Hawfinch) are perhaps easier to see in Bulgaria than elsewhere in Europe.
Butterflies are numerous, too, with Eastern Festoon a specialty.
We’ll be staying in hotels and guest houses, all featuring private bathrooms—and some with great birding right outside the door…
…though none of them is as elaborate as the nest of a Penduline Tit.
Nowhere in the world can Paddyfield Warbler be found breeding farther west…
…and the same goes for Pied Wheatear…
…while all the local wetlands are good for terns, including Whiskered in breeding plumage.
