Our tour begins in the parks of Melbourne where we’ll see…
…exotic-looking parrots such as Sulphur-crested Cockatoos…
…and world-famous Laughing Kookaburras perched in old gum trees.
Then we’ll fly to Tasmania and drive straight to Bruny Island where…
…we’ll hope to see all 12 Tasmanian endemics including the flightless Tasmanian Native-hen…
…Black Currawong…
…and Dusky Robin, as well as several species easier to find here than on the mainland…
…such as Pacific Gull – the gull with the biggest bill in the world – …
…and the endangered Hooded Plover.
Returning to Melbourne we’ll spend a day southwest of the city looking for Koala and…
…driving down the Great Ocean Road to Split Point where we’ll watch the sea for…
…albatrosses such as this Shy, though our views won’t be this close – this one was photographed on our Sydney pelagic.
Next we’ll drive north to Deniliquin in New South Wales where the dry plains are often covered in spring flowers…
…and this ‘outback’ environment may reveal Emus and…
…the largest of the macropods, Red Kangaroo.
We’ll linger after dark to search for several species easier to find at night…
…such as the much sought-after Plains Wanderer, a species in its own family and…
…we usually also see Stubble Quail.
Other specialities in the Deniliquin area include Superb Parrot…
…while swamps and marshes attract crakes including this Australian Spotted Crake and…
…local knowledge may lead us to a roosting Owlet-nightjar.
Back in Victoria we’ll spend time in the tall eucalyptus forests around Healesville…
…where Superb Lyrebird will be our main target.
In the parks around town we’ll watch Satin Bowerbirds attending their bowers…
…be captivated by beautiful Pink Robins…
…hope to encounter striking Gang-gang Cockatoos…
…and have close encounters with King Parrots…
…Long-billed Corellas…
…and Common Bronzewings.
On our final day we’ll search for bizarre Tawny Frogmouths and…
…awesome Powerful Owls.
