In Adelaide we’ll visit the vast wetlands of the St Kilda saltfields…
…where from the bunds between the tanks we’ll scan for…
…flocks of delightful Banded Stilts…
…graceful Red-necked Avocets…
…delicate Fairy Terns…
…and White-fronted Chats, which decorate the banks.
In the late afternoon we’ll visit Brookfield Conservation Park in the hope that a Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat might be sitting out in view.
Then we’ll drive further inland to Gluepot reserve and its vast tracts of mallee habitat…
…where a variety of special birds include Southern Scrub-Robin…
…White-browed Treecreeper…
…and if we are lucky, the cryptically patterned Malleefowl.
At remote spots like Gluepot we take our own supplies and enjoy mid-morning snacks in the mallee from the back of our 12-seater minibus.
In woodland along the famous Murray River we’ll search for Regent Parrots…
…and flocks of noisy Apostlebirds.
Flying north we’ll visit the Red Center of Australia, Alice Springs.
Here we’ll visit scenic Simpson’s Gap where the sparse avifauna…
…includes aggressive Pied Butcherbirds…
…confiding Grey-headed Honeyeaters…
…and acrobatic Little Woodswallows.
…and lethargic Black-flanked Rock-Wallabies.
Another spectacular spot is Trephina Gorge…
…home to curious Western Bowerbirds…
…and colorful Rainbow Bee-eaters.
Around Alice we’ll also hope for nomadic species such as Budgerigar…
…and brilliant Crimson Chats.
Our final center is Darwin in the tropical far north – the Top End.
Here waterbirds abound and include stately Black-necked Storks…
…sharp-eyed Pied Herons…
…powerful White-breasted Sea-eagles…
…two species of whistling-duck – Plumed and Wandering…
…and cute Green Pygmy-Geese.
In the local parks we’ll seek a range of woodland birds from Barking Owls….
…to stunning Rainbow Pittas…
Agile Wallabies with joeys will be grazing in the shade…
…and a boat trip will provide close encounters with the Top End’s most famous inhabitant – the Salt-water Crocodile!
