Edwin Selempo started birdwatching when he was a schoolboy in Nairobi. One of his teachers ran the only school group of the Young Ornithologists’ Club in Kenya (the junior branch of the UK’s RSPB) and it was through the inspiration of this teacher that Edwin quickly developed a passion for birds. During a YOC group field trip to Ologorsailie in 1984 Edwin first met David Fisher and Don Turner who were leading a Sunbird tour to Kenya. After completing college Edwin went to work for Don’s company East African Ornithological Safaris (now known as Origins and still the ground agent for our Kenya tours) and spent a number of years working as resident naturalist in EAOS’s tented camps. Long residencies at the Mara River Camp and Delamere Camp allowed Edwin to build up a sound knowledge of Kenya’s birds and other wildlife. He then moved on to the Taita Discovery Centre near Tsavo National Park (also run by EAOS) and spent several years working as the resident naturalist and guide there. In the early 2000’s Edwin decided to spread his wings a bit and changed jobs within Origins becoming one of their safari guides. Since then he has led or co-led all of the WINGS Kenya tours and many other safaris besides.
Edwin is first and foremost a keen birder, but he also a very knowledgeable all round naturalist with a serious interest in mammals, reptiles, butterflies, and dragonflies. We know of few other local guides who can identify most of their native dragonflies by both English and scientific name! He is also an accomplished artist, and his illustrations and paintings have been used in a number of publications, including a color painting of Sharpe’s Longclaw on the cover of Important Bird Areas in Kenya published by Nature Kenya/BirdLife International.
